    Meet the Staff

  • Wendy Carolina Mendez

Wendy Carolina Mendez Program Coordinator Wendy Carolina Mendez is 24 years old, and lives in Guatemala City with her parents, siblings, and son, Jonatan. Wendy first learned of MuJER through her mother, a sex worker activist. Wendy is very proud of her mother and says that because of her mother she was able to complete her studies and advance professionally. In 2007, Wendy started working at MuJER as a secretary. In February of 2008, she began visiting the women at La Linea as a case worker. Over time, she got to know the women on a personal level, and started to give them literacy classes. Wendy is really happy with her job because she loves working with women sex workers. She was especially thrilled to become MuJER’s Programs Coordinator in 2009. She is proud of herself because she never imagined becoming the Programs Coordinator, and relishes her responsibilities both in the office as Coordinator, and in the classroom as a teacher. Wendy is currently studying English in a university in Guatemala City, and is interested in studying law in the future.

    Meet the Instructors

  • Paola Hernandez

Paola Hernandez Paola Hernandez, MuJER’s Jewelry-Making Instructor and a Guatemala native, was born in San Antonio Suchitepequez.  She left San Antonio when she was very young to work as a housekeeper until 2004, when she started working as a sex worker.  In 2006, Paola began the elementary school program at MuJER, and since then she has taken many courses including the beauty and computer skills classes.  Since joining MuJER, Paola’s life has changed in the sense that she thinks positively about everything.  She finished elementary school and MuJER gave her a scholarship to study jewelry-making, a craft she greatly enjoys.  In November of 2008 Paola stopped working as a sex worker and instead focus on her new goals of graduating from nursing school, working as a nurse, and receiving her high school diploma. With OMES she works as an educator, conducting workshops on human rights and self-esteem.  Paola has a ten-year old son and is very proud to be a mother.
